Strange to be Normal - Long Tall Sally Pop up Shops

One week ago I had the pleasure of not only having my Mom in town from Cleveland Ohio, but the Long Tall Sally Atlanta Pop Up Shop right down the street, all in the same weekend! I had read about the pop up shops by chance a few months ago, and about a week and a half before the pop up shop in Atlanta, I got a call from Long Tall Sally letting me know about the event. I made sure to post it on my blog and tell any tall ladies I came across in my day to day as to help bring in the crowd as much as I could.

My mom and I planned to be at the shop first thing Saturday morning to make sure we had the chance to get what we needed from the stock they brought with them. I highly recommend to anyone that has upcoming pop up shops to do the same, as about an hour later the shop got very busy. All though, if they do have an item you like but cannot find in your size, they will order it there and ship it to you for free. Faboo! And if you take an item you change your mind about you can come back to the pop up shop and return it, or ship it back to the store in Minnesota.

I have to say the experience was rather strange though! Walking into the room full of racks and tables of clothing everywhere I looked were women that were my height or even taller! For a brief hour or two I was average :) My Mom, who is 5' 11" joked that for once she had a hard time finding me as she couldn't just look for my head above all others. Lots of lovely ladies, all over 6' tall shopping for whatever they could get.

I was soooo excited to see so many people showing up to the shop, as the more we show the stores there is a market here, the more likely we will be in getting our own permanent store.

All of the Long Tall Sally ladies were so wonderful and helpful. From what I could tell, some, if not all of the ladies, were from the store in Minnesota (Mall of America). They had the system down pat to funnel everyone to the changing "tents", greeted everyone with smiles, and were always there to help you find an item for you or even recommend items. I heard lots of little roomers floating around as we shopped. Things like another round of pop up shops in 6 months (YAY!) and a possible store opening in New York by fall. The hopes of being able to do more in person shopping added even more excitement to the day.

I didn't find a lot of items, but I did really enjoy the experience. And my only reason for not finding many items was more about my own personal style. But perhaps if the market keeps growing so will the selections. But for now, we are just so so lucky to have what we do!

So we have the places to shop? How about some more selection?

It is amazing how many locations us tallies can shop now. Longtallsally.com, TopShop.com (Talls), NewLook.com (Talls), DorothyPerkins.com (Talls), OldNavy.com (Talls), and a ton of others. But all of those places.. always seem to have the same styles...

The lack of choices limits us tall folks from truly expressing ourselves through our clothing. Examples of current trends that are in tall clothing, are baggy, flowers, stripes, and lace.

Where can a girl find structured, solids, that are figure flattering for a girl with curves? Not just plus size, but with naturally wide shoulders and hips. And how about the punk/rock style?

Where can we go to ask to design us the more edgy fashions? Hot Topic has a plus size clothing store called Torrid.com that carries tall and extra tall pants and jeans online. Perhaps Hot Topic would consider a tall clothing store?? Who can we write??

Another thought I had was trying to reach out to Kimora Lee Simons Hounsou. Kimora is 6' tall, and even though she has the ability to purchase the high fashions like Puchi, in talls, perhaps with her new KLS line, she would consider a tall womens clothing line?? Again, who can we write??

Preparing for a fashionable flood!

For years in school the fear of having floods, also known as pants that were to short, was something that haunted us tallies every day. Well today, ladies, is the day it's in to have floods! Introducing, Ankle Jeans...

Which means for once we can walk into a store and buy, what average height folks call Jeans, and what we can now call Ankle Jeans. We should enjoy the trend while it lasts! Perhaps you are concerned Old Navy is not the end all be all of what's in? Well here is a collection of Ankle Jeans from Bergdorf Goodman. Extra plus about ankle jeans, they can be rocked with a pair of cute flats!

Three quarter length sleeves, ankle jeans...AND... Ultra platform shoes!

So a straight on platform is stripper, but a tapered platform is fashion. Either way, it means ladies are striving to be even taller. I guess 6" heals were just not tall enough? How amazing is it, that the look of short clothing and extreme height have all come into style. How lucky are we?

Do we get to rock those very in style shoes, us more timid tallies, perhaps not. But at least we can walk around and see more lovely ladies eye to eye. :)

I wonder what they will come up with next????

Last night I had such an amazing night! Yesterday with my birthday, and to treat myself I went to see Thirty Seconds to Mars that included VIP tickets with side stage access and a post show meet and greet. I got to meet Thirty Seconds to Mars!

So what does this have to do with being tall? Well... nothing really. But while at the concert I realized, once again, it is so great to be tall!

Entering the VIP pre show waiting area, I was asked by multiple people how tall I was. Not uncommon for any of us, true. But it was when we were let into the theater before the general admissions folks and I stood in the back of the theater and watched folks pile in. If you have ever been to a general admission show, it is quite the experience. If you want to really see the band you have to get in line hours in advance and sit/stand and wait. All to get up close and more than likely get smooshed, smashed, pushed around, and for average height folks, only be able to see what you can between the heads of the people in front of you. But the taller you are, the more you can see OVER other peoples heads.

So sitting in the back of the theater I watched all these people pile in. And as the crowd got closer and closer to the back, I felt worse and worse for people that were not only average height, but shorter. Unless they were there with someone that would put them on their shoulders, the best they get is the vibe/energy of the crowd, the music, and the knowledge that they are, in fact, in the presence of a band they love.

But for the tallies? We get to see over the crowd and experience an extra level of the concert!

I know I have mentioned this before in another blog about a 30STM concert that I went to in Nashville. But I begin to express how much I have really finally learned to love my height.

When it was time for the band to go on stage, I utilized the perks of my VIP (Golden Ticket) pass and watched from the side of the stage. Which in this case, was a taped off portion of the stage. In front of a crowd of 2600 people! Before going on stage the tall folks were asked to go to the back of the group, so everyone had a view. And me, I was in the back, and had a view! Some photos..

After the show we had our meet and greet with the band. Everyone in VIP stood around in a great big circle. The guys - Jared, Shannon, and Tomo - Walked around and said hello to each person and stopped to sign an item for everyone. My item? My pants!...

So here is another tall plus... LONG LEGS! lol Had I not had my long legs, Shannon (Entire left leg) would have run out of room for his "Happy Birthday" for me. So my plus thought, is that my height made me stand out to these really awesome guys, that make music that I adore.

As I get older, 1 year left to 30, I get more and more comfortable with my height. And the more I notice my reaction to "I wish I had your height" turns more away from "No you don't" to "Why thank you! I love being my height!". I wouldn't give up a single inch. I love myself, my body. Ever scar, every red spot, every inch. Perfection IS IMPerfection!

I wish I had this confidence when I was younger. No matter how many times people told me when I was growing up that I should love being my height, I never got it. Until know. The plus of getting older!

In case you are wondering, Jared's documented height is 5'10". Oh, it was also a medical themed night. Hence the scrubs.

A note for any person! If you ever have the opportunity to see your favorite band with the VIP experience on your birthday. DO IT! Yes I know it cost a lot, yes, you may need to travel, but this is what life is about! ;)

My mom called me the second she heard a LTS store popped up in Utica Michigan. It turns out to be a clearance store open for a limited time. So I did some searching on the LTS web site and discovered the list of "Pop up shops". Long Tall Sally shops that open only for a limited time. My guess is to test the market. Searching on the web yet again for new places to shop for clothing and I ran across this site with tall womens clothing for adult and teen women. Scanning through the tops I caught this....

Not only is the girl obviously NOT wearing a bra... but the shirt is advertised as SEE THROUGH. Note the matching tank top with the same issues in the lower right.

I left out the name of the site to not be overly vindictive. But come on... if you were some high end designer selling oober couture fashions maybe you could pull that off on a runway. But its a basic cotton tee you are selling to the average adult and TEEN. The top would look just as good, perhaps better, with a bra under it!

Please do not promote teen girls in going bra-less in a see through top. The world doesn't need the perma' wet t shirt look, especially on teen girls.

Say it ain't so! Or send me an explanation at least!

Okay so.... seriously bummed out. I have to say I did check a couple other pairs and they were either close in price, or even though they were a GREAT deal higher on LTS, I couldn't find the shoes anywhere else (ONLINE in 10 minutes) in size 12. But still...

What up with that? Is it shipping them from Manufacturer to LTS in Europe then back to the US? Perhaps its the size 13 shoes that the manufacturer is marking up? Benefit of the doubt?!

Moral of the story... even if its on a specialty site... PRICE HUNT! Google it! You may save yourself a buck... or 75....

I don't even want to know what the mark up is on the clothing... because they know we can't find it anywhere else! Blah...

Suesi Jeans (xtralenght.com) RE-REVIEW

Yup! I am doin a re-review. Why? Well this one was because I had so many comments and emails about how sizes tend to run smaller in different parts of the world. So, I held onto the jeans, and continued my quest to lose weight. And guess what? I lost 30 lbs :). So now I am re-reviewing Suesi Jeans!

My size in American jeans right now is 16/17. I have 2 pairs of Suesi jeans (Higher rise blue jeans) from XtraLenght.com that are marked as size 20. And I have 1 pair of Suesi Jeans (Lower rise gray) from XtraLenght.com that are marked as size 18.

So here comes round 2, 30 lbs less....

It is quite the difference from the first review. I love the fit of the gray lower rise jeans. My only request is to add more denim into the pocket liner, as the white liner pops out of the pocket a tiny bit.

The 2 pairs of blue jeans are not cuts meant for my body. I have wide hips and wide upper thighs, hence the puckering in the crotch area and the rear. But the waist is comfortable and the denim has a little stretch which is nice.

So what do I rate Suesi jeans now? I give um a 4 outa 5. I think they have a great thing going and its great to be able to get customized jeans. On their site you can purchase 1 style of jeans in high or low rise. High rise comes 10-20 (So for Americans 8-18) and Low rise 6-14 (Americans it could be more like 4-12). And you can get them in any inseam from 35-39. So you can choose a style, color, length, size, and rise. Which is lovely! Just be aware with that many custom options also comes cost. So if you have the cash for the jeans and the shipping , you can get a nice pair of custom made jeans.

The grass is greener [30 Seconds to Mars]

10/31/2010 - I don't know how many times someone shorter has told me "I would love to have your height!" or "I wish I was your height" or anything along those lines. Each time I respond, no... you don't. But what I don't stop to really think about is anyone that is not "Average".

Last Sunday I flew to Las Vegas, a 4 hour flight, with my friend Jennifer. Jen is 5'3" tall. Exactly 1 foot shorter than I. Now Jen had a lot of benefits, like

being able to curl up in her seat and move around, where I was stuck in a solid sitting position the entire 4 hours. But Jen had her issues too. Like, without taking off her seatbelt and standing up she couldn't get to the air and light controls. I had to reach up and get them for her. I even reached them for the woman sitting next to me on my other side. I was also able to reach out and grab blankets from the storage bins above us without any serious effort.

Just last night I was walking through the grocery store with my friend Marilyn and an older gentleman stopped and asked me how tall I was, then proceeded to point to a balloon he had lost control of that was now just out of his reach. I was able to grab the string, grant it I had to jump a little, but I was able to rescue it for him none the less. He thanked me many times and even again when we passed him while leaving the store. That made me smile that I could help someone.

So I guess being tall isn't all bad. Now I am going to put this blog on pause, because I am going to see if I can use my height for my advantage this evening. I will be attending a 30 Seconds to Mars concert, and I have made plans with Marilyn to hang out down town around the venue well before hand. Why? To see if my uniqueness can attract the attention, and hopefully a picture with Jared Leto. For whom, if you follow him on twitter, likes to take pictures of and with unique things and people. Like mwah! So crossing my fingers.. for now...

11/6/2010 - Wow I paused for a really long time. So my plan didn't exactly work. But it's alright! Because the band didn't show until it was showtime! In tern another advantage unfolded. Because the band was MIA we ended up getting in line really early, and managed to snag 3rd row spots! Here is another really big advantage of being tall!...

As you can see my view is a full head over everyone else, and there for a completely clear view of everything on stage. And, oddly enough, we managed to place ourselves next to a woman that was 4' 11" tall. Talk about contrast! Through out the night she asked me to get pictures for her with her camera as I could get clear shots by reaching my hands up.

This also actually brought up another discussion topic. When we got into the third row spots there was no one behind us. And anyone behind us chose to be there. Before the band went on there were 2 short girls behind me that kept stating (OVER AND OVER) "We can't see anything!" then they asked me to allow them in front of me. No matter how much it pained me to not help someone, I had to say no. Why? Because if I step back for them, I should step back for everyone shorter than I. And that means... Amber ends up in the back row. And all people around 5' get to be right up front. Thats not right! So I stood my ground, and stuck where I was. Which actually turned out to be good, as I used myself to protect all the shorter girls around me from people that felt it was okay to elbow you in the face and push you over just to get closer. Instead of doing the right thing and standing in line for hours like the rest of us. Triumph over rude people!

Fall is here!

Today it is rainy and cold and it couldn't be more wonderful. After days and days of blue skies, sunshine, and 90 degree weather. It's finally starting to feel like fall. I can't wait to break out my sweaters and boots, and neither can Long Tall Sally! This years Fall clothing line is fabulous! So many items I want to buy!! Check out some of the awesome items they have this season...

The fabulously structured coats with a military flare are a classic and classy way to go without worry of ever going out of style. This particular coat has an awesome purple embroidery to add some color and extra flare...

Tall boots, both calf high and thigh high, are in fashion this season. LOVE!! With a long, figure flattering sweater (that covers the booty), and great leggings, you will be worm and comfy as well as sexy and stylish. And best yet, LTS has lots of boots in flats! :D

And lets not forget the fabulously structured clean line dress... oh yes... With an added structure to the shoulders and smooth lines, yet another Long Tall Sally item I am in LOVE with.

My credit card will be on fire this season! :)

I don't want to go without mentioning... there are a few rather...shall we say, interesting items in the fall line as well. Like this lovely pair of tie-dye leggings which, even in the outfit don't seem to go...

Ooooor this lovely number which would only be useful if we were say... jogging in Jersey... :)

I probably shouldn't bash those pieces. I will admit, they just aren't my style. But if anyone purchases them and manages to make a cute outfit, PLEASE send me a picture, and I promise to recant my negative comments. :)

Roller-coasters - Scarier then the average bear

Can you tell I am in a mildly silly mood? I hope so. ;)

I know... I know... its been a while. You know, when you don't have much of a life, its hard to find topics to write about. Especially when trying to not use a blog as a vent. So today I thought I would talk about roller-coasters. Some of you may know exactly why and some of you may not. Depends on how long your torso is. :)

I grew up in Cleveland Ohio, which is a short 2 hour drive from the oh so magical Cedar Point. While growing up we used to spend 1 full day, from open to close, every summer, at Cedar Point. If you have ever seen a show on roller-coasters you have surely heard about this place. Cedar Point is known for having a very large collection of world record breaking coasters. Nothing compares to Cedar Point on the east coast.

Anyway!.. As I got taller I noticed that the coasters with those big padded shoulder harnesses got more and more uncomfortable. They got to the point where I had to scrunch down to uncomfortable positions and even then the harness would still have a creepy gap between the bottom of it and my stomach. Then get tossed around going who knows how many MPH and man was that creepy. Above and beyond the average persons experience.

There did come a point where my sister and I got old enough that we no longer made the annual trip to CP. So I didn't really think much of my trouble with coasters. That is, until we moved to Atlanta GA. My first 2 years here I had the pleasure of visiting Six Flags over Georgia a couple of times. And I just have to say... after growing up with Cedar Point, Six flags was pitiful. (Sorry Six Flags but you know its true). Not only were their like a quarter of the roller coasters, but add in the shoulder hardness issue and that cut the rides down even more. Especially this one....

Superman: Ultimate Flight (Video)

In case you can't tell, you are literally laying face down as though you are flying. You get strapped in by a leg harness and a shoulder harness and then laid down to face the ground, with nothin holding you in BUT the harness. Now imagine what it would be like riding that if the shoulder harness was angled away from you at about 30 degrees. Here is a diagram so you can get a mental picture...

You are line B to C. The harness is B to M. Pretty significant! Would I attempt that ride? Heeeeeeck no! Makes me sad being a roller-coaster person. So I was thinking... perhaps we should get together, in our consecutive states, countries, home towns, and make a list of roller-coasters we CAN ride. Is there one you love to ride at a park near you? One that adjusts for height?

I will get it started... The Mantis at Cedar Point (Video). A stand up roller-coaster where the seat adjusts up and down (for the shorties ;)). As long as you know the trick to relax your legs while riding, its a blast! :)

Finding self confidence

This topic is something that is always around in life, for tallies and shorties a-like.

One of my mom's favorite stories to tell me is how, when I was an itty bitty kid, I could make friends in a matter of seconds. On vacations where we knew no one, I would just walk up to the nearest kid, strike up a conversation, and have an instant new play buddy for the rest of our time there.

Somewhere along the lines, things got a little more complex, and interactions with other people became more of a challenge. I eventually became a pretty decent social recluse. It even caused problems in my dating life, as my boyfriends could never understand why I had such a hard time being around people.

In a past post [Changing the way you think people look at you] I talked about how there will always be negative comments, but there will also always be positive ones as well. And that you should see yourself, not as a side show, but as a rose in a sea of daisies. And I still believe that to this day. I do admit, that even though I wrote that, I still had a lot of social outcast days, where I just didn't wanna hear it.

That post was from over a year ago. So what have I learned since then?

I have learned that we have the ability to change the world and there for change how we see ourselves. Sounds a bit overwhelming right? Sure it can be a challenge... but its not impossible, and its something anyone can do.

Just remember there is always something underneath the surface. Humans are like the ocean. Outside we may look as simple as a big ol body of water, but when you stop and think, you realize there is this entire world underneath the surface and out of our site.

The other day I was watching a movie called "Charlie Bartlett". In the movie Charlie confronts a bully, and he strategically counter acts the bully by noting the bully probably has some things going on in his life that causes him to treat people the way he does. Perhaps his father is mean to him, perhaps the bully was bullied in the past, etc.

What Charlie did was looked past the surface to find the cause. So what if we applied that to other areas or our lives? As a general example, when you get stuck behind someone blocking your way to your destination and they are moving rather slow (you can be driving or walking), what do you do? I personally get frustrated, get close to their back end, and at the first site of space I fly around them, even if its a dangerous move. Or at least I DID do that. The entire time hoping the person would notice me and realize they are in the way. That is me looking at the surface. An object (the person in my way_ that has the ability to be aware but obviously isn't and that to me is rude.

BUT!

Lets look under the surface. What if that person just lost someone close to them? Or lost their job the day before and are trying to figure out how to make ends meet. Maybe they had a really bad fight with their best friend? And because of this they are lost in thought and not focusing on everything around them. I know if that was me, and I had someone rush around me all flustered that I was in their way, I would feel down right horrible. As I never want to disrupt someone else's life because of my personal issues.

So now... when I get around someone that seems to be on another planet (so to speak), I stop and think of 3 reasons why this person may be that way, and put my mindset in their shoes.

Lets do the same for tall stuff. "Do you play basketball?" don't look at it as "Shorty is assuming all tall people play basketball". Relate the question to something like "Did you see the baseball game?" or "What do you think of this weather?". The person sees you as someone they would like to have a conversation with, and like any average person, has stated the obvious to try and get things rolling.

When you catch people looking at you, perhaps they like your hair, your skin, your clothing/style, or think you are rather attractive? They may see your shirt and realize its one they saw on someone else and wonder were to get it.

Give people the benefit you would hope they would give you. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you"

When dealing with people and their reactions, always remember to look under the surface. All of a sudden people have more emotion than just anger and ill will. You may even catch yourself being more pleasant to people, and those people may be a little more pleasant to the next person they see, and so on. Attitude is contagious. Positive or negative. Enough positive bug and BOOM you've changed the world! Even if its the world in your eyes. You have the right to see things how you choose. So why not choose a world that is positive and uplifting? And don't let other people convince you other wise.

As a result, I can promise, you will stand taller, feel stronger, and have a lot more confidence in yourself. You are a rose with your own eyes, brain, body, and voice. You choose for yourself!

Take it, use it, share it. Change the world, how you see other people, and how you see yourself.

New job, little money, NO CLOTHES!

I have found myself in a conundrum.

Lots of things have caused my current situation in which my post is about today.

1) I have worked from home for the last year, which means there has been no need for office clothing

2) Since a very stressful time in my life my weight has fluctuated quite a bit, there for rendering the office clothing I do own almost unwearable.

3) Due to the economy and shortage of jobs, financially I don't have a lot of extra money to purchase new clothing.

So today, I had high hopes, thought positive, and yet was met with disappointment.

I searched the 2 sites best known for clothing that, size wise, fits me. (Keep in mind I need a 36" inseam) Long Tall Sally (aka Tall Girl Secrets) and Long Elegant Legs. Neither of which had anything that resembles anything I would wear that is office appropriate. So frustrating! Not to mention the constant cost of just 2 items totaling over $100 (US). Without spending extra money to take a risk on delivering items that don't fit.... I just don't know what to do....

Do I stop eating for the next week in hopes to lose the last 5-10lbs to fit into my old clothing and completely ignore up to date styles? It seems to be my only option. So sad! I love you Long Tall Sally and Long Elegant legs, and I applaud you for selling clothing for tall women, but, your selection is targeted towards a specific group of people. Folks that like to wear flowery patterns and boho tops. And anything that is not, is wide set and baggy... not good for girls with figures. :(

I had this concern with Tall Girl shop, and now I find myself having the same concern with Long Tall Sally. As the store buyers or owner gets older... the clothing styles get older as well. Where are the clothes for the metro chic 20 somethings?

My search continues. My plans right now, wear what I can from my closet as long as I can. :/

Growing up, I remember always feeling like I was fat. Which is pretty normal for a female in todays day and age. But what really didn't help was that I weighed so much more than other girls and even though the reason was my height... I could never quite get that to sink in.

Naturally I am not only tall, but I have wide set hips and wide shoulders. Natural curves, by bone structure, is something that is coveted by a lot of women. Tall women's body shaped range just like an average height woman. Some of us shot straight up and look as though we were stretched out, and are compared to bean poles. Where there are also a decent number of us that have an average curvy body, but with longer arms, legs, and torsos.

I can't remember a time that I wore anything less than a size 14. And no matter how much weight I lose, I will never be in the single digits in size. Add in that I spent most of my adult tall life around 200lbs.

So listening to my pears chat about how they hate being a size 8 or 9... then knowing I wore a size 14-16... man was I miserable. I learned to check out the scientific calculations for weight per the Body Mass Index chart. But that still never seemed to help.

To add insult to injury, tall womens clothing was not cut to fit a woman that was tall WITH curves. So it would squeeze me in the wrong places causing accentuation to my worst areas.

When I reached 18 years old, I was really fed up with my body and feeling so heavy. I went as far as using diet pills to drop my weight down from 200lb to 175lbs. But I paid for it with panic attacks and heart palpitations caused by the pills, just to feel skinny. And even then I was only a size 12.

All women go through the discomfort with their bodies. Being tall and having the higher numbers in not only weight, but size, without even being over weight, makes it tougher.

....

So when it comes to weight... what are the pluses of being tall???

How about the calculation of caloric intake? A friend of mine that is the average female height of 5'4" tall was told to lose weight she had to keep her intake down to 1300 calories a day. Where me, being 6' 3" tall can take in 1700 calories to lose weight. 300 calories is almost an entire meal with the right foods. So its not so tough for us tallies to lose weight based on caloric intake. We get the benefit of eating more. We also burn more calories when working out.

When growing up and up and up... its hard to feel comfortable with yourself in many ways, the larger feet, larger hands, long arms and legs, higher weight, larger sizes in clothing.

Now a days there are more options in clothing, thank goodness. Clothing that stretches to allow for the curves and still fit our bodies without squishing things. So I have high hopes for our future tall generations. But what else can we do to try and help our tall teen girls cope with just being heavier due to height?

Julie and Julia - A great movie for tall women!

I am watching the movie, Julie and Julia. Actually I am watching is as I write. I know... this movie has been out for a while. Forgive me for not keeping up.

Julia Child was 6' 2" tall. And this movie, is not just a depiction of Julia as a cook, but Julia's life all together. Including the interaction of averaged height folks around the ultra tall Julia. It is so amazing to watch the time spent to get the interactions just right. It makes me feel.. well... good!

This movie is hard evidence to all the folks that ever tell you that no one acts differently around you. As I write this I am at the scene where Julia's sister came into town and they are actually having a discussion about being to tall and NOT fitting in. Amazing! So so funny!

And the best part, Julia never EVER apologizes for who she is. She is a proud, tall woman, who enjoys every moment of life. A lesson for all of us!

Suesi Jeans (From XtraLength.com)

The owner of Xtralength.com reached out to me in hopes to sell their jeans in the U.S. markets, in these winter months, as while it is warm in their home country of Australia, its cold in the US.

I'm always excited to try out new tall women's clothing, especially from up and coming companies.

One thing I enjoy about Suesi jeans is the ability to get up to a 39" inseam. Great for those that are ultra tall.

However, I have to be honest in my review. For U.S. customers, I feel that your denim needs can be better suited, at a better price, via other U.S. company web sites. I received 3 pairs of Suesi jeans. Without looking at price I try on the jeans, analyze the fit, the shape, the fabric, the stitching, and the over all look. I am sorry to say that 2 pairs compared quality wise, to me, to Old Navy jeans, that, for U.S. customers, come at a fraction of the cost of Suesi jeans. 2 of the pairs came at a high cost of $140 each, and that doesn't include the high cost of shipping from the other side of the globe.

I did take some comparative photos. Please forgive the photo quality as my good camera has broken and I have to get it repaired. Also, please forgive my figure, its not at its best at the moment!

First photos are my favorite brand of jeans, Parasuco. Cost of the jeans, $100. Size 18. Same fit and cut as the Suesi jeans. The Parasuco jeans are a bit old, but the pictures are of freshly washed and dried jeans. Meaning they are at their smallest and tightest.

Parasuco jeans have a great combo of spandex and denim that give you enough give in all the right places. They also have more ornate stitching to give them some style. And they do come in up to 38" inseams depending on the style. They are also worn by celebrities and are known as "designer" jeans. Hence the high cost.

Now for the Suesi jeans. Same cut jeans, but size 20 and cost is $140

These are brand new. Size 20. Notice the front view they were so tight I couldn't get barley get the zipper to close. And to be honest I couldn't keep them on as they were hurting my internal organs. The fabric is very thin, but that may be because of the polyester mixed in. On the Xtralength web site they say the blend is to allow you to stay cool in the summer. I will have to test that one out this summer. But the ornamental stitching on the pockets are extremely basic. Quality wise they just remind me to much of Old Navy jeans, which, come at 1/5 the cost.

I have tried on a many many pairs of jeans. Some from the US, Canada, the UK, and now Australia. I do realize I do not have the ideal body shape, and that peoples shapes probably change from country to country. That is why I specifically state above, and again now, my review is for US customers. Take my opinion what you will. Feel free to give these jeans a try! You may have better results.

Tall Girl Shop US site is back

Okay I have no idea how long it will be around, but yesterday I received the email that the Tall Girl Shop US site is back.

I checked out the site, and well... it is exactly the same as the old site.

I took a few minutes to scan the site, checked out all the new clothing. Even though I found an item or two that I would consider cute and trendy, once again, Tall Girl has failed to hit the nail on the head with their selection. ::: sigh :::: Perhaps the plan is to have Long Tall Sally sell the more trendy items, and Tall Girl Shop sells the more basic pieces for the folks that are more about comfort then trend. Here are some of the new items on the site.

If you enjoy looking like a duct tape alligator, give this one a shot. If they added a belt it may have helped. But talk about no shape!

Okay so I bashed 2 items, here are 2 items I like!
This sweater looks perfect for those super cold days/nights and you wouldnt be embarrised to be seen in by other human beings. :)

Making a man feel like a man while with a tall woman

Tonight I got to hang out with a friend I haven't seen about 5 years. My friend Kady, who is around 5' 4" tall, and her husband Joe, who is around 6' tall. Hanging out with them, even for the short time, I got to see exactly why men would want a girl that is so much shorter and smaller then they are.

Example: We were hanging out at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. Kady and I were standing up on a wall that is about 5 feet high. I had to pull myself up and down, which i will admit was much easier then it was for Kady. Kady, I helped up onto the wall. But to get back down, without a single word, Joe walked up to her so she could wrap his arms around his neck. He wrapped one arm around Kady's waist, and swung her, without effort, to the ground. What a cute site!

I have talked to many men about taller women. Some say they don't mind. Others say they love tall women. But your average man, prefers a tiny girl. Even the super tall, NBA basketball players. Why? Because they want someone they can protect. And I can see why! What girl wouldn't love to have a guy be able to wrap one arm around her, and effortlessly swing her to safety. Like a knight in shining armor.

So today, after hanging out with Kady and Joe, I came home, kinda bumed. How does a girl that is taller than average recreate that type of feeling, to make her feel like a girl, and her man feel like a man?? Thank goodness my best friend Jay was online to chat with me! He helped point out some things that I think we girls tend to forget. Here are the basics for girls...

In the eyes of a man, girls never: Poop, fart, burp, sweat excessively, have body hair, smell funny, or get dirty.

Now even though that may be sexist to some ladies, I find it kind of fun. Do you enjoy hanging out with your girlfriends, burping and farting? I think not. So why do it around your guy?

So how does a girl make a man feel like a man without taking size into factor?

- Have your man get your car when its raining outside

- Have your man do things that require effort; i.e. open jars

- Have your man drive when ever you go somewhere together

- Have him squish bugs you find around the house

- Any time he does something for you, make a big deal about it, as though he has saved your day! :D

These are only a few little ideas. And sure, some people may think that's lame, old fashioned, just WRONG, but why not have some fun? Why not make your man feel good, and in turn he will feel more manly to you. Size doesn't always have to matter in relationships. And it doesn't mean you can't do any of that yourself. Do it for the good of the relationship. :)

Tall Girl Shop - What the heck is goin' on???

This is a follow up to my last post. One of my readers, Lesley, was so wonderful as to keep me up to date as to the goings on at Tall Girl Shop. I went to the Tall Girl Shop site the second I saw Lesley's post on the last blog, and there it was.... the baaaad news. A flat image that stated that TGS was no longer shipping to the US and that we should now do our shopping at Long Tall Sally. I then came to blogspot to start this blog. I realized I should have grabbed a screenshot of the image with the sad news, but when I went back to http://www.tallgirlshop.com/ I didn't get the image I had seen just a few minute earlier. This time I was greeted with the same old site, but now with a TGA Canada logo. So I decided to click around to see if I could find the image. No image to be found, but here is what I found:

So I have to say their plans aren't very clear. To go from stating you are no longer shipping to the US, to having International shipping on your site.. then Shop AT Long Tall Sally to... Check out the TGS site as we will get in new fashions from the UK AKA Long Tall Sally (and international shipping)? Sooo can us US people shop there? Or not? With Long Tall Sally carry Tall Girl Clothing and vise versa? And most importantly... where am I going to go for my Parasuco Jeans?!?!?

Hopefully Tall Girl with clarify their information over the next few weeks, along with their fashion updates. But so far... nothing thats going on has been done very clearly or cleanly. Frustrating!

I will always have a special place for TGS. It was my first outlet for clothing that was actually long enough for my limbs, even though their styles have always been lacking. And it was one of my first jobs, as I worked in the, now closed, Cleveland Ohio store at the age of 18.

Is the transition of Tall Girl Shop a sign of the economy as I had previously posted?? Or perhaps it is the economy making Tall Girl Shop a bit more exposed to their lacking in business sense. Not to be harsh... but the lack of style? the lack of selection on the web site? and now the ever changing information???

Tall Girl you will always have a place in my heart... but maybe it IS time to retire?? And I say this knowing it is one less place for tall women to shop, in person OR online... but... is there really much value there with things the way they are?

Lets hope this new partnership with LTS will turn things around!

I woke up this morning to a scary email. Tall Girl Shop is closing ALL of its US stores! Now the only place to shop at Tall Girl in person is Canada. Lucky Canadians! Is there any place to shop for Ultra Talls in the US in person?

I am going to be writing an email to the people at Tall Girl Shop. It will be a plea to post more clothing on their web site. With no place left to shop in the US, the site is all we have left! Please do the same! Maybe if they get enough emails they will follow through.

So sad. No more options to pop into the store while visiting New York City. Or while visiting family in Seattle. :(

Long shorts on long legs - Torrid

This past weekend my Mom and Aunt came into town for a visit. We ended up at one of my favorite stores, Torrid. If you haven't read my other blog on Torrid, its a plus size store that carries talls and extra talls in slacks. A double bonus for us tall girls that are not stick thin. They also have a younger, punk style in their clothing.

So while we were shopping my Aunt pushed me to break from my traditional clothing selection and go for long shorts. Some people may call them board shorts or carpi's. Something I have never tried on as I thought it would not compliment my shape. But I soon found out that perhaps I just didnt find the right tops to go with the long shorts! We managed to put together 2 outfits, both with long shorts. Here are some pictures of the outfits...

So I have officially broken out of my shell and tried new clothing and man am I excited to wear my new outfits out into the world!

The next time someone suggests a top or slacks or some clothing you feel don't fit you... do yourself a favor. Try it on! See if you can make it work! You may be pleasantly surprised and have an entirely new and exciting selection of clothing you never knew you had! Its hard enough to find clothing that is long enough for us, why limit ourselves on style as well??

Next step for me?! High heels! :)

The economy effecting fashion? Or are people just nuts? RANT WARNING

Specialty clothing stores, even when not based in the US, are no doubt taking hits from the current state of the economy. Atleast I hope that is the reason for the drop in selection...

I have been hunting and hunting clothing stores via the web for days. I always start with my 3 basics, Long Tall Sally, Tall Girl Shop, and Long Elegant Legs. NONE of them have what I am looking for. That is where I start to branch out to lesser quality locations... no offense to those sites but come on... you could do better..

After an hour and a half of hunting, then googling, and hunting more... I get nothing.

Come on folks? I know the economy is bad but the web is the cheapest way to get your clothing out there! Not to mention you can reach every corner of the globe! And yet your sites are so lacking....

Where are the classic little black dresses every girl should own? Where are the pensil skirts? Where are the solid print sexy cut tops? And where are the clean lines in solids? Sites seem to be covered in drab casuals, matronly smocks, and overly boho styles. To many overly busy flower patterns, to much layered frilly lace! Where do we go for the sleek metro styles? Or the tops we can wear out to the clubs and rock out??

Seeing high shelves

About a week ago I had spent some time hanging and shopping with my friend Ivy. After we went shopping we met up with our friend Deepak and had dinner together. While at dinner, my blog came up in discussion. I was trying to come up with the next topic I would write about. Deepak and Ivy had told me to write about the pluses of being tall. I stopped and tried to think and the only thing that came to mind was reaching things on high shelves, which to me, sounds kinda silly.

Ivy, who is 5' 1" tall, quickly pointed out that without me she would have had a tougher time shopping that day! The reason for our shopping was in search for shoes Ivy needed for an upcoming event. The stores we went to had stacked shelves that stacked above Ivy's line of site. So as we walked up and down the isles I would scan the upper shelves as she scanned the lower ones. Ivy would have had to either do without seeing the shoes that were up high, or found some way to get herself high enough to check them out. Which is a dangerous situation.

That's when I stopped to realize that reaching things high up is actually not so silly. When you walk into Ivy's home she has a stool around to stand on to get to the upper shelves in her kitchen. Where I can reach well above the TOP of the cabinets in my home. And lets not forget to mention people of even shorter stature that currently have reality shows on TV. You see how much they struggle to not only reach high places but to reach things on deep shelves.

So sure... it may seem like something really small, but we really are pretty lucky to be able to navigate our homes and stores without having anything out of reach. The next time you take a glass down from the top shelf, or realize the top of your refrigerator is reeeally dusty... be thankful! You have a much more expansive view of the world than people of average or shorter stature! We are so blessed!

When riding in airplanes

Lesson 1: Always pick your seat the day you purchase your ticket, and book as early as possible!

Seats with extra room:
- Exit Row (My top pick)
- Bulkhead Row (The very front of couch or the plane) Just keep in mind in these seats you will most likely have a wall in front of you, so you cant stretch out your feet as though you had a seat in front of you. But it does have the space for your knees.

Book early:
- This used to mean risk of missing out on deals, but keep an eye out for sites like Orbitz (http://www.orbitz.com) that will refund you the money if someone buys a ticket for the same flight at a lower price!
- Be aware, some airlines to charge extra for the coveted seats! So keep an eye on the extra charges!

Check at the gate:
- If you don’t book in time to get a spacious seat, remember to ask the attendant at the desk at your gate on the day of your flight. He/She can keep an eye out for you incase someone doesn’t make the flight, or someone moves out of one of those coveted seats.

Lesson 2: Store your stuff in the overhead. Even your purses ladies!

Trust me on this. After about an hour on a plane you will wish you had that little bit of extra room to stretch your feet under the seat in front of you! If you don’t feel safe putting your purse in the overhead, try to carry a smaller purse so you have as much room as you can get.

Lesson 3: Neck pillows for longer flights

If you are taking a flight that is up to 2 hours long, chances are you will have a smaller plane. And those planes do not have adjustable head rests. When your head is far enough above the rest, sleeping just stinks. You end up looking like Mr or Mrs packman with your jaw wide open and your head tipped back at a 90 degree angle. And resting your head against the wall (if you have a window seat) is no fun either. Neck pillows allow you to rest your head, keep it at a comfortable angle, and don’t add any extra padding directly behind your head.

Lesson 4: Comfy waistband!

Seats in a plane are designed to make a person of average height comfortable. That means, if you have a longer torso, your shoulders will be curling over (forward) from the padding that, for an average person, should be just above their shoulders. This in itself will smash your internal organs like an accordion, but add in a tight belt or waistband… and you will feel like your internal organs are being choked to death.

So today I was writing a blog on "Lessons when riding an Airplane", in which I will complete and post later, but this other thought process took over my mind and I felt the need to write about this first! Warning, this one is a rant!

I have thought about this a few times, and now I am going to bring it out into the world. My idea is... Ultra Tall Person card (UTPC). Stay with me here!

There are plenty of people that get special treatment, and rightfully so! People that are handicapped, and pregnant women. Both can get cards or stickers that allow them to do things like have special parking spots, or be seated first on a plane. But what about us ultra tall folk? I was just reading an article about how average height people covet the precious exit row on an airplane. And because of this airlines are starting to charge extra to sit there.

A plane seat is designed to keep the average height person as comfortable as possible while cramming as many people as possible onto a plane. But what about the ultra tall people?? What average size people don't realize is for us ultra talls its not just about room for our knees. It's also about our posture. As in, the seats are formed to have padding that curls over and average person's shoulders. But, for people with longer torsos it pushes our shoulders forward. This causes our internal organs to smash up like an boxed accordion, and after an hour on a plane, we feel pain in places we didn't know existed! But having the exit row allows us to move more to uncrush vital internal parts, even for a moment, and give us some relief to get through the rest of the flight.

Imagine being incredibly uncomfortable, having your knees jammed up to the back of the seat in front of you, hunched over with your head a mere inch or two away from the roof, and having to sit that way for 2 or 3 hours. You feel so cramped and claustrophobic it literally feels like you are unfolding when you finally stand up. So why are the people that need the extra room of an exit row, to keep their intestins out of thier lungs, should pay extra?

Now I would say that we get first dibs on an exit row, but there is no logical or just way for an airline to hold on to exit row seats for ultra tall folk "just in case". And they sure as heck can't kick someone out of an exit row to give it to a UTP. So I won't go that far.

I don't think UTPs should get special treatment everywhere. Lord knows we don't need our own parking spots or anything like that! So please don't take this as I am ranting that I want to be treated super special. I actually want to be treated as normal as possible! For me its just things like the exit row charge. We (UTPs) need to sit there so we aren't causing any damage to ourselves like our backs our or stomach, which can both be greatly effected when kept bent or squished for long periods of time. Don't we deserve the right to be as comfortable as you are on a plane in a normal seat? At least?

Tall Women and S&M... PG-13 Folks!

When I started this blog I went onto Facebook and MySpace and joined every tall women group I could find. I had hopes to find things to blog about, but to also share my blog with the tall women that were also part of said groups. Little did I realize that not only tall women looked at or joined, but so did the short men that adored and obsessed over them. I got so many friend requests and messages from men eager to add me to their "collection" to obsess over and speak disgustingly to. Trying to lour me into their sick fantasy world.

(If you are a parent of a tall girl, or future tall girl, please please PLEASE be aware of the men that troll for tall girls/women and troll the tall women groups that are in these online communities. As teen girls are the easiest to manipulate. We need to keep our future tall women safe and on the right track!)

I have one guy friend who really lives on the crazy side of life. The other night he said "Amber, you would be perfect as a dominatrix!" I quickly responded "Thanks, but no thanks!"

I have nothing against women that have chosen that career. If you are happy, which is most important, then kudos to you! But, man am I tired of being asked if I myself am part of said world. It's bad enough that movies portray tall woman as masculine giants. But so many men look at us as female incredible hulks. And sex objects that are used only to fill their sick fantasies caused by mommy issues they never worked through.

I fear that there are tall women out there that cling to these men... not because the girls enjoy the lifestyle, but because they enjoy what they believe is the only so-called positive attention they can get.

I suppose we get stereotyped just like a lot of other people out there. I.E. Short skinny blond with large chests are airhead barbies(?). Stereotypes are everywhere. But if we allow ourselves to fill those stereotypes, without them actually being true... we only feed into the issue. We should respect ourselves, our minds, and our bodies. We were not put on this earth to make someone else happy by sacrificing ourselves. We need to make us happy, first! That is simply life and relationships 101! But it seems to be tougher as a minority that can be so easily stereotyped in such a demeaning way.

With the advent of clothing stores in malls and on the web like Tall Girl Shop, and Torrid (for tall, short, and plus sized), there is no reason for us to force ourselves into where ever we can squeeze. We can now find a great suit or pencil skirt and blouse, walk out into the world, and say "I am independent, I look out for myself, I am damn proud to be who I am, and I will not give myself up for anyone!"

Torrid jeans have a great fit. The jeans are made with 1% spandex which gives them a little stretch where ya need it. The waistband also has some give to it, and is a bit wider so that it doesn't roll for those of us that have tummies. Torrid jeans also come in many lengths. Extra-Tall (36" Inseam), Tall (34" Inseam), Regular (32" Inseam), and Short (30" Inseam).

Quality:
I have to give them some time before I can see how they wear, but so far so good. The structure is great, the stitching is solid and the fabric is right up there with designer jeans but for half the price.

Over-All:
If you are looking for a cute pair of jeans, that fit well, but don't want to spend $90+, check out Torrid. They sell their Talls and lower in stores. Extra-Talls are only online from what I have seen. Torrid is a store for the more edgy look. You find more punk styles in bright pink, skulls, and zebra prints. But you can find a lot of great pieces even if that isn't your style. And the jeans.. well... you can't go wrong with a nice wash and a little distress to spice up a basic t.

Things to never say to or about tall women

NEVER Say:

"Damn you're huge!"
"Can you palm my head?!?"
"Holy Sh#%!" (Unless pertaining to her beauty)
"How big ARE your feet!?"
"You could squish me!"

Things that are just lame to do or say:

Holding out your hand, flat with palm out, to go palm to palm to compare hand sizes, yes... our fingers are longer. And our feet are bigger... if they were the same size as yours... we would look pretty damn awkward!

"Do you play basketball?" Please be prepared with a follow up question or response other than "Oh" or "Cool". As those are obvious responses of someone just looking to fill their stereotype of Tall Person = Basketball player, and are not genuinely interested.

The point is girls like to feel feminine. And there are words that, meant or not, have a negative connotation. So please stop and think about what you say before you say it!

As tall women we have to learn that people will usually have some sort of reaction to our appearance. We're different. Take the good with the bad. Enjoy not being one of the crowd. And use it to your benefit!

Old Navy Jeans

Fit:
Old Navy has been in business for quite a long time, and it’s obvious, they know what they are doing. They did a great job applying their knowledge to jeans with a 36” inseam. For a low cost tall jean, I felt the fit was great. Believe it or not, I have tried on jeans that cost 3 times as much and fit no where near as well as these $30 jeans. Now, mind you, my body shape is not average, to add to my un-average height. I have wide hips, so the lower rise jeans, rarely ever fit well, and I understand that. But when talking about over all, Old Navy hit pretty close to the mark! Kudos Old Navy!

Classic-Rise: Even with my wide hips these jeans fit pretty darn well. I felt comfortable enough to wear them out with a fitted t-shirt and not worry about tugging at them to make sure they were in just the right place to stop from weird bulges.

Mid-Rise: These were a slightly different story for me. They fit and weren’t uncomfortable, but I did have some un attractive squeezing. I would not be able to wear anything fitted on top. It would have to be something more loose to not show the little roll I had goin’ on. But, like I said above, I have wide hips, so your results may be different.

Quality:
The jeans are built well. They have great shape and quality stitching. The place where Old Navy kept the price low, is in the fabric density and details, but to be honest, when you are talking about a pair of jeans that look great on you and cost less than $50… who cares about some designed stitched on the pocket?? I know your teens may say otherwise, but come on. Even as a teen I would rather have a pair of women’s jeans with a long enough inseam from old navy, over men’s jeans from Walmart, any day!! This is one of those times you have to go… “You don’t know how lucky you are! Back in my day… (insert your own story of “floods” or men’s pants here)”.

Overall:
Old Navy gets a thumbs up from me! I want to give this store a big hug and say Thank You! Thank you for finally making affordable jeans in our sizes. We no longer have to be oober rich or go into debt to find a pair of jeans that fit well. And we all know… if you don’t feel good in your jeans… you don’t feel good about yourself! And it shows! So go to oldnavy.com and replace those poor fitting jeans you got in your drawers and closets! When ya get the Old Navy package in the mail, put some music on, slip into your new jeans, and rock out girl!

How awesome is that?!?!

When I started this blog a few months back, I started hunting down groups on social networking applications like Myspace and Facebook to join and share my blog. Most groups, I found, really aren't very active. Except for the Tall Women's Club. This club, based out of Australia, is constantly sending out messages and updates on goings on in their community of tall females.

This morning I was sooo excited when Sue, the Co Founder of the Tall Women's Club, sent out a message that included links to news stories (TV, Radio, and Web) on tall women, or "tallies" as they like to call themselves. That's right! Tall women in Australia drew attention by the media!

Not only did the media stories touch on our unique issues with finding clothing, and the looks we get when walking down the street, but they also touched on the difficulties of dating! I knew I wasn't hallucinating the issue with men not liking tall women! lol

There's no such thing as last minute shopping

I guess I should clarify what I mean by the subject line. Last minute shopping is possible, but comfort level will more than likely be sacrificed.

I actually am in this situation today. I have a cocktail attire birthday party this evening and what better excuse could you have to buy a new cute cocktail dress? So last week I did my online hunt to all my usual web sites and managed to find 1 cute, not to expensive, cocktail dress. So I placed the order and in 5-7 business days it would be at my door. Yay! So all week I was sending the picture of the dress...

...to all my friends to get their opinions. The dress was clean lines like I love to wear, but had the extra spring colors to it, which was something sort of new for me. Not my usual. So I was super excited to surprise my friend/birthday girl with this different look that I tried just for her big day.

I have been waiting all week to get the call from my concierge that I had a delivery. As of this morning I have not gotten the dress yet. So I went online to my email box to find the confirmation email to find a tracking number. To my bafflement (new word I just made up) there was no email! And I keep ALL of my confirmation emails! So I went to the clothing site (http://www.lanebryant.com/) and looked up my order history on my account, and these words were plastered across my computer screen "You have no open or recently shipped orders."

My mouth dropped open. This can't be! I KNOW I ordered that dress!!! So, the last place I didn't check was my bank about. I quickly went online and opened my account history... and... as you probably have guessed... there was no charge from the store.

Let's ignore the fact that I apparently hallucinated making the purchase, it was now the day of the party, and I had no new dress! Sure... I have a back up dress I have worn in the past. But lets be real ladies... when cameras are at events the last thing you want is to be caught in the same dress you wore somewhere else. Its like the Emmies or Grammies but on a less grand scale.

Darn it all!

So today... I find myself scanning web sites of local stores trying to hunt down a dress I may be able to run out, purchase, and some how pull off. Even though I know the arm holes will more than likely be to small, my shoulders will be wider than was meant to be in the dress, if there is any type of waist it will be at an odd position between my waist and bust, and since its spring time... the dress that would hit an average height person just above the knees, would hit just below my rear. Look out boys!

So yay that I may be able to find a new dress still... but its not going to fit me like a glove. And how do you rock a dress that you don't feel was made for you?

So there ya go... there is no such thing as last minute shopping. For all you tall ladies remember... plan ahead, make sure you get that oh so important confirmation email, and if you can, order more than one dress. You can always return the unused dress!

The Bathroom Stall

How would you feel if you saw THIS when you walk into a bathroom?

This is an issue we should not be afraid to talk about. Some of us are too tall for the bathroom stall.

How many times have you been in a crowded bathroom, stepped into the first available stall and realized, your eye level was over the top of the door and walls? I have found myself crouching down while I unbutton and button my pants just so I don’t make people in stalls next to me feel uncomfortable. If only there were regulation door and wall heights out there. All walls and doors must be over 7’ tall! We wish! I mean, men don’t have this problem! Men all pee on a wall right next to each other! Women are much more conservative on how and where they potty. We need to be in a closed in room by ourselves. And even then we can only go number 1 comfortably in the public bathroom environment. But let’s not get off topic here…

When ever I can, when in a crowded/busy bathroom, I will make my way to the handicapped stall at the end of the row, simply for the room to step back from the walls and not have that creepy “I can seeee you” appearance to other people. If any handicapped person ever has to wait on a tall person to get out of their stall, I apologize for all tall women out there. We will be quick and get out of your way.

Changing the way you think people look at you

My way of thinking for many years was that I was seen as a circus side show. I was an oddity that drew people’s attention and I hated it. I thought the world had labeled me as a freak.

As a young girl it was hard to see a positive of my extraordinary appearance. When I started to become taller than most of my class I was picked on a great deal. And a lot of people treated me differently because I was different only in appearance. And I didn’t get or want any of the attention. All I wanted to be was normal.

For years I tried to squish myself down and dress to hide. I would slouch in my seat, hunch when I walked, and wore drab, baggy clothing. I was quiet and withdrawn to the world. But at home I was a vibrant girl that loved bright colors, crazy patterns, and things like lava lamps, psychedelic posters, and dancing to pop music videos. I was hiding who I really was, for fear of standing out more than I already did because I thought people would laugh at me and pick on me.

I wish I knew then, what I know now. That the world did not look at me like a freak. It actually looked at me like a beautiful red rose in a sea of daisies. I wasn’t something to be shunned like I had thought for so long, but infact something that would be admired. As I learned to take more pride in myself, and what made me stand out, the world started to open up. Sure I still got the “Holy crap, you’re huge!” every once in a while. But I learned to laugh at those. Because for every one of those not so nice comments, I got 10 “Man I wish I had your height!” or “Have you ever thought about modeling?!”. I still don’t know how to answer to those compliments. I usually just blush and say thank you. But I never feel my response is enough.

I will openly admit I still have my days where I cower away from things due to mental blocks I have caused in myself. I one day hope to get the confidence to take partners dance classes. As I have always loved to dance. I know a few friends of mine who are reading this and rolling their eyes at me being afraid of doing such a thing. And they and even I know.. it’s all in my head!

But when I walk into a club, our a lounge, packed full of of people I stand tall in confidence that I am not one of the crowd. Many times have people approached me to compliment me on my height. And many guys have bought me drinks because they thougth I was unique and exotic. Other tall girls give me high fives and we cheer each other on. Like we are in some unique club that bonds us without even knowing each other.

Life is an amazing experience and I feel blessed to be able to stand out from the crowd. I dress in stylish clothes, I wear stylish accessories (stylish darling, not designer ;)), I go to stylish places! I love living in the city and being surrounded by people. When I take a minute and think back I can actually find ways my height has helped me get a lot of the amazing things (if not all) that I have today. And I will forever use it to my advantage.

Who knew that such a small change in my head of how I thought the world looked at me… could change so much. You may think that people think something negative… but what does that get you? Try thinking positive for a while and see how that goes! Remember, you are a red rose in a sea of daisies. You are special, you are beautiful, you are unique. Live it, love it, and use it to reach the stars. You are technically already closer than most people by being taller then they are!! ;)

My current size is 18. My lowest size was a 14. And I know, no matter how skinny I get I will never fit in anything less than a 14.

Sooo... now its your turn!! Tell me your size! You don't have to put your real name.

Why do I want to know?? Simple! Stores make tall sizes Zero and up the scale. But I have never heard of a woman, over 6' tall, that is smaller than a 10. So ladies... lets be free! Lets say our true tall size!!!

Oh I am so excited! Today I spent some time googling and, normaly, when I see a chain store try to do their rendition of talls I don't even bother looking. Mostly because tall to them only include trousers that are 34" inseem. Golly gosh really livin on the edge there folks!

So today... I investigated the Banana Replic/GAP/Old Navy site... and happy day, they have tall talls! They even have a fit guide to show that they have longer sleeves, lower arm openings, longer body length, 36" inseam legs, longer inseams, everything! I am so sad I didn't catch this earlier! I am so looking forward to purchasing clothing from these stores and really trying it out.

In the mean time, if you have tried tall clothing from any of these locations, please let me know! I would love to get your review and post it on the site. Lets join together our tall knowledge to help other tall women!

Backstory: I have been shopping at Tall Girl for about 10 years now. When I was in early teens the clothing selection was way to old for someone my age. In my late teens the selection picked up to cover more age ranges. I actually worked at a Tall Girl location in Cleveland Ohio for a a few months and enjoyed the employee discounts. Those were the good days for the store. Unfortunetly in the last year or two, selection has gone down. If you are lucky enough to have a store in your area, you have a much better selection then online. But even in the stores... I feel its hit and miss.

Depending on the brands of clothing you can find some good items.
Thumbs down are Tall Girl brand or the Neva brand.

The price of clothes are more along the lines of JCPennys or Macys. Around $70 for jeans, $60 for trousers, and $30-$40 for a nice top our blouse.

Shipping: ●●●○

Shipping is good. They package everything nicely and I have never had anything damaged. Clothing is shipped from the closest store to you that has what you ordered.
Price is around $10-$20 for basic shipping

Returning/Exchanges: ●●●○

This is a place that includes a return sticker, which, I LOVE. So to return the cloths, you stick them back in the original packages, slap on the new sticker, and toss them in the mail. Fabulous!

Pluses:

Tall Girl Shop has some decent clothes if you really hunt for them.
Good place to shop for basics but be prepared to make some exchanges when shopping via the web.

Minuses:

The selection at Tall Girl has gone way down hill.
Their web site stinks. I always found that in the stores there was so much more than on the site. Which doesnt make sence to me, because anyone can shop from anywhere via the web site. But alas... the selection is horrible for younger more fashion forward people. Even for teens in general its limited. Quite disapointing. I only shop there for the basics.

Concerts

This past Thursday I attended the Britney Spear's concert at Philip's Arena, here in Atlanta.
Any person that is over the average height of a fully grown adult can point out pluses and minuses to being tall at a concert.

Pluses: You can see over EVERYONE when standing. Even general admission seating where you are standing on a flat floor. You will have no problems seeing who is on stage. Another plus... your view is clear to take some great pictures! :D

Minuses: These are only minuses if you are a person that actually cares about other peoples feelings at concerts, and that is... when in a stadium seating situation, you will undoubtedly block the the people in the row behind you and maybe even the row behind them. For me... I hate doing that. Especially to younger kids. I have actually learned to sit on the top of the chair back, or have the seat folded up and

sit on top of the front of the seat. That helps me get high enough to see over the people in front of me, and still not block the people behind me. :)

But other than that, I can't think of any other difference at Concerts. I have to say though... I went to a Bon Jovi concert last year, and I had to laugh at all the non city folk going "Da** she's tall!" That's all you can do is laugh. You let that kind of stuff get to you, and you willl lose out on life. So keep going to concerts!

This blog isn't going to be a full site/store review, because I have gotten good things from this place. This one is to target the specific pants that I purchased... and then promptly returned.

I really wish I would have gotten a picture of me in these pants before I sent them back. Why? Because they fit SO horribly.

To big? To small? Neither! Here was the issue...

Metro Trousers - whom ever thought that a form fitting trouser should be made on incredibly thin fabric should be slapped. As I have said in other blogs, I am not a skinny tall girl. I have some curves to me. And these pants, accented ALL of the wrong bumps and curves. Talk about making a girl feel crappy. These trousers were HORRIBLE!!

Either pair of jeans - also relating to girls with curves... the people that made these jeans are out to make money and not make a quality jean. I say that because they seem to think that a heavier girl just has bigger hips and thighs and not waist. AND they don’t even bother sizing the back pockets of the jeans to fit the size of the pants. Imagine... nice round booty... iiiiiitty bitty pockets (see amateur drawing below for assistance with mental picture). What the hell?!?!

I give all of these items a Long Elegant Legs a thumbs down. Unless you are a tall girl that is naturally skinny... don't waste your money.

Parasuco Jeans

Parasuco is a jean brand that never ever fails me. I am a heavier set tall girl so fit in more then just length is major for me. Parasuco takes the time to shape the jeans and pockets so they look great on every size.

Parasuco Jeans are worn by musicians and their dancers on tours. People like Madonna, Justin Timberlake, and Bon Jovi all love Parasuco. Can't beat that kind of backing!

Over all Ratings:

High end jeans that are cotton/spandex mix. Fit like a glove and hug in all the right places!

a Saturday afternoon. Everything was in its own bag and the coats and vests had their own hangers.

I always enjoy places that send you return stickers. Long Tall Sally included a sticker with the return address, but it did help remove one step of those darn labels to fill out, so returning was made very easy.

Over all I really love Long Tall Sally. I love them so much I actually wrote them an email to thank them. Their site was very easy to use, as they have an automatic conversion of British Pounds to US Dollars. When you click on a piece of clothing, on the right hand side of the page, other clothing pieces appear that you could add to your selected piece to make a cute outfit. Very helpful for people that have trouble putting things together!

Minuses:

I will always put location as a minus for me. I live in Atlanta, and there isn’t a single tall women’s clothing store for me to shop IN and actually try things on before buying.
Another minus for me was that some of the clothing would have been made a bit better. But with mass made clothing… there are always some misses.

Introduction

As my first blog I thought the best thing to do is to introduce myself and let ya know why I am here.

My name is Amber and I am a 6' 3" tall woman living in a world made for "Average" people. I have spent most of my life trying to find self confidence in being different than everyone in a small, narrow minded town. To trying to find some sort of self style when clothing and shoes did not come in my size and length. Let’s not even get started on trying to pick out a new car, or ridding on roller coasters.

I am excited to say over the last 5 years, I have managed to find my own. I have grown into a confident, proud, tall, woman. I have also built an extensive collection of locations to find things to fit me in the world.

Every time I meet someone new, my height will inevitably become a topic of a few conversations. Asking me if I have always been taller than everyone else. To "Do you play basket ball?". I have to say I rather enjoy the days people ask me if I am a model. During the conversation I try to educate people a little bit on what its like to be physically different, or as I like to call it, vertically gifted. Pointing out how hard it is to find clothing, shoes, fit my long legs in cars, etc. And the lack of organization or quality in anything that has been thus far created in an attempt to accommodate the extraordinary sized female. And every time I hear "You should make your own clothing line for tall woman!"

I always felt it was too much work. And the thought of having to learn to sew all of the latest fashions? Yikes!! So I never did anything with the idea, that is, until now. 2 years ago my niece was born. Her parent's both being over 6' tall, I knew... this little girl is going to have a rough time growing up! She is my motivation for this blog and my future plans to help tall girls and women feel confident in themselves. It's time to take a stand, organize, review, and really build a world out there for everyone of every size and shape to feel comfortable and be able to express themselves. Average is overrated!
